2013 iron 883
First post here, so I'm gonna buy a 2013 sportster iron 883 as I love the all black look.. My question is why is it that these bikes are consider girls bikes? I am a first time harley owner , and have been doing a lot of research on them.. I don't get why they are called that, but I love the look of them.. I just didn't wanna get a bike that's more for women .. Any input would be great thanks

I don't know and don't understand it.
I also own a sportster and it requires more skill to ride well than my street glide. The only thing easier about a sportster is standing it back up if it goes over, because it weighs less.
The power to weight is higher on a sportster making them more touchy on the throttle and with more acceleration. The wheelbase is shorter making them more touchy on the handlebars, they will respond more quickly to steering input. They get pushed around in the wind more because of the lower weight too and again the shorter wheelbase makes them less stable going down the highway.
They are actually great bikes to learn on because you're so much more actively involved in riding it. If I had to identify any harley as the "girls" bike, it would be the softtail, but I want one of those too eventually. They're all good.
Oh and the sportsters actually sound the best too.

This comes up about every three months.
This is just a stupid HD myth that came from insecure non-sportster riders. It started as a joke and became something that some people believe.
If you're bothered by things other people say, don't buy one. If you can hold your own in a joking conversation; buy the bike you like.

I wouldn't say a sportster is a girls bike. Ive had a couple and the only reason I purchased a bigger bike is because my wife loves to ride and I wanted something bigger and more comfortable.
There are several women that ride sportsters and stick with them because they are smaller and easier to handle. My mom for example started riding back in 2000 on a honda rebel 250 and when the 100th anniversary bikes came out she had to have one and ended up with a 100th anniversary blue 883 custom with every package available and still rides it to this day. She's a riding instructor for HD and has ridden several bikes. She says if she was ever going to get a different bike it would be a sportster 48 or a new 1200 custom (she loves chrome) with the fat tire in front. The only complaint she had was, she wanted more power. So we installed 1200 kit and she fell in love with the bike all over again.
I wouldn't worry about other guys/girls making fun of your bike. Make it your own and ride it like you stole it. Those irons and nightsters make awesome looking bobbers. Good luck and ride on!

Hey, thanks for the welcome on my thread. I love the Iron 883, it was just a little too small for me although having said that, with a few changes I think it would have been great. I don't know why anyone would call it a girls bike. I'm glad you didn't let that keep you from getting the bike you like. That being said, I've seen women on some amazing bikes of all shapes and sizes. I'd be lucky to have one (well, except the pink and white one). I really like what you got. Congratulations and have fun.
