Default Oil Filter Question

Hello, The HD dealership has an all stainless mesh reusable oil filter with a magnetic crap catcher for about $130. There are others on the market and I am wondering if this is a good investment. I also understand that Harley offers a extra capacity filter which also seems like a good idea. Any thoughts or suggestions on these would help a lot. Thanks.

Hey Hazzmatt,

Any question dealing with oil and oil-related things generally gets a variety of strongly-held opinions out there, so this is just one to get started answering your question...

I guess if I was ever convinced that a reasonably-modern engine had ever failed solely due to either a particular brand/type of oil, or a particular brand/type of filter, then your question would have a straightforward answer.

As it is though, it seems to me that this is more a matter of opinion and style. Reusable oil filters have been around for a long time, and I've known people who have used them.

Other than the significant entry price, there doesn't seem to be any downside to them, except perhaps the mess of cleaning them out for reuse.

With $130.00, I can buy something like 11 K&N filters with a welded-on nut for easy removal.

I'd rather just do that.

All the best,

Shane

You really are the best placed to answer your own questions! Personally I wouldn't buy one as I have three Harley twins and better things to spend out on. They are attractive to look at, but then that comment applies to a lot of the honey-traps set to catch Harley owners!

These have risen from "Heresy" status, suitable only for fools, to "now the Dealer carries em" status. As people gradually learn the difference between absolute and nominal filter ratings they're opting for PF's.

I have bought one (look at the sig pic), each time I change oil I'm happy I have this, I am at 150,000 KM with no end in site, I've changed oil at least 20 times, it can go to another bike, no problem, the micron scale is good for this type engine, I'm happy with mine.
Oh yes, mine was @ $65.00 + shipping.

Go for it.

I think I would stick with the Harley Filters, and with all my Sport Bikes & Harleys I stuck an EXTREMELY Strong Rare Earth Neodynium Magnet on my filters to have all the internal "ferrous" metal attract to the inside of the filter wall.

I read where a guy cut open the HD filters an have them a strong review. Well made an lots of filtering material, he rated them above AMSOIL filters. I use them on my bikes. I used to use K&N on my v rod for the nut to make install/removal easier due to location of the filter. I went back to HD filters for it after reading K&N moved production offshore an they aren't as well made. I don't see anything wrong with the reuseable filters but I don't want to clean one.
