Default 97 883 vs 02 883

Is there a big difference? I can't seem to research this very well? Anyone with any experience? I found a 97 with 15k miles I'm interested in and a 02 with 20k I'm interested in as well, but other than the upgrades each have I can't seem to tell the difference

Dont think theres too many differences really lol. i was in the same situation trying to decide between an 02 and 96.

ended up taking the 02 with 17,000 miles for $3000. they were wanting $2500 for the 96 with 15,000 miles so i just went with the newer one.

The 2002 has a few differences: sealed wheel bearings, cam/pinion gear HCR teeth, parallel crank pin vs tapered, bullet style turn signals, different tappet anti-rotation pins, different lifters, and then some minor minor cosmetic stuff that doesn't really matter anyway as it differs every year.

Unless you plan some serious engine mods, the differences are negligible. The only thing that would affect day to day riding/maintenance would be the wheel bearings. The old tapered style require cleaning and repacking every 10k-15k miles, while the sealed ones are install and forget.

2002 = Better Brakes.

And with the bearing change mentioned (and related hub,rotor,slider change) in 2000, the ability to easily upgrade further has improved

The 2004 has the wider rear tire which I regret not going for (I have a 2000) but stay away from the 21 inch front wheel on the 2005's and up, my son had one of those, did not handle and ride near as well, the front suspension is shorter and weaker also.

Neither, unless you are stuck on a paint shocker. For little more you could get 2004 or newer with rubber mounted engine, so much more enjoyable to ride and parts don't fall off near as much. Better yet hold out for a 1200 for the lower gearing and passing power.

The 883 has lower gearing than the 1200.
