Default 2014 harley 48 crack in engine casing

So here's the story. I went to go take my 2014 harley 48 to the dealer to get a 5k service done. I went to grab a bite while the mechanic did his thing when I received a phone call to hurry back because there as a problem. He showed me a crack in the engine casing on the bottom of the bike. I asked him how the HELL did this happen and he said it could have been from hitting a pot hole or some big bump.

Side story, 1.5 years ago I low sided the bike going about 25 mph. The insurance company sent over a mechanic to assess the damage but just deemed it as cosmetic damage. Didn't inspect the motor much or anything. I still cant see how this accident could have caused this damage since the bike didn't hit anything it just slid a bit.

Could my accident have caused this damage or could it have been hitting a pot hole of some sort? The mechanic also said that I would either have to A. replace the motor or B. have it aluminum welded. He said there is no leaks at all.

Do you guys think that I can just leave it and ride the bike as is? Is replacing my motor the best and only option?

Thanks in advance for your help.

If aluminum welding is a possibility and has a good success rate of fixing any possible issues then I would look into that. I'm sure it would be considerably cheaper and give a better peace of mind.

No way was that caused by hitting a bump. Don't see it that way. First question was the bolt that goes there removed? If so why? That holds the mount and the cable.

Can I also add that the broken material looks REALLY clean for it to have happened before going in. If the break happened on their table I'd ask some more questions

Only my opinion, you went down 1.5 yr ago, got it fixed "cosmetic" and you have been riding it ever sense, would their not be more dirt and grim in that area? looks like a recent break to me. We all know you will never get the real truth from the recent tech or the past tech who did the original repairs.

Have the service manager look at it and discuss the issue with him.

Looks like someone put in too long a bolt (hole looks stripped, maybe even a larger bolt) and overtightened it, breaking off a piece of the case. Is that a ground strap that bolts to that location? Or is that part of the rubber mount?

That break looks fresh, no way it happened a year and half ago.

I was thinking the same thing. That looks like the ground cable. If so then yea that happened on their table.

I agree with Sparrow...there'd be grim on those clean threads if you'd be riding around with it like that. If that's the ground strap that bolts in there it might not run with out it. I don't know how many grounds are used but I'd suspect the shop did something...maybe an air gun on that bolt?
