Question How do I know/figure out what I've got?

OK guys...
Just bought an 89 1200 XLH
It came as a partial basket case.
The previous owner states that he has done some work to it, which is apparent from the custom paint job, trimmed rear fender, S&S backing plate, and a few other things.
What I'm trying to figure out is, do I have original parts, aftermarket parts?
I'm not certain the carb is aftermarket but I'm not certain it isn't either. (Never really messed with sportys before)
I also have a set of drag pipes that the PO says do not fit and he doesn't know what they go to.... I haven't tried to mock them up, just took his word for it as I'm waiting for other parts to come in anyway.

In any case, aside from contacting the PO, how do I figure out what parts are on and/or came with this bike?

There are plenty of Sportster experts here, but they won't be able to help you at all without pictures.

You can start by comparing your bike to some of these pics:

Pics and/or part numbers may help forum members identify what you have.

Wink

You should also get yourself a factory service manual, which will help you greatly. For example it will show you the stock carb, so you will know immediately what you have. With an FSM you can also shorten the list of questions you want to put to us! Look forward to seeing some photos, so we can suggest other ways to spend your money!

Carb looks stock. Are you sure that's an 89? Belt drive wasn't standard on a 1200 until 1993

Take the vin and do some research for the year.

Hope you got it cheap. Looks hacked.

Belt drive conversions for Sporties were around shortly after the MoCo started using them - may even have sold by themselves, I don't recall.

Just looks newer to me then 1989. I'd take the vin and input it into a decoder.
