Hey Dan,
I think some here on HDF have done it but I know for sure many over on www.xlforum.net have and I'm sure are willing to share their experiences.
I've never done it (already have a 1200) but am familiar with some engine work and would have to say that though intimidating as it may lookas long as you can follow instructions (factroy service manual too) and have the right toolsit can be done in a weekend easily.

I got my 1250 kit from nhrs, excellent service and quality work. For the $495 they'll bore out your current jugs. The work is fairly easy to do, just follow instructions. The only specialty tool you need is a decent torque wrench, and a regular socket set, and allen wrenches for the rocker box's. NHRS also can fit the new pistons to your cylinders for you also for a little extra cost, this will eliminate the need to set the gap on the piston rings yourself.

The only oil issues with nhrs are from headwork on the rubbermount engines. Other than that the cylinder kits and boring jobs are top notch, and will not cause any excess oil ussage if installed properly. The head work on pre rubber mount engines is top notch as well. But regardless it's always good to to as much research as you can.

Check out the threads on XL Forums and you can see that no one knows exactly where the problem lies. One of the forum members that visits here and there has returned his bike back to an 883 by putting the pistons and cylinders back and his oil useage has went back to normal along with his oil temps. Heads were not a factor.
I see the original poster has an 02 Sportster so this may not affect him. It seems to mainly affect 04 and up Sportsters from the threadsI have been reading.
