Default Comfort: Progressive Shocks vs. Stock

I have read pretty consistently that Progressives are a hard ride. My question is: are they harder than stock shocks in the tightest position.

I've been riding with the stock shocks in the tightest/hardest position, and I like it. Some people would say that's too hard of a ride. I would just like to get an idea re: relative hardness.

I have a 2003 883. I weigh 207 lbs. this am (probably more tonight after I consume more brew and cholesterol).

If I could hijack a little to add to the conversation... If the ride from progressive is poorer than stock, what is the advantage of the progressive?

What number are your shocks set at for the hardest position?

Progressive shocks are not a hard ride if you select the correct shock (Standard vs Heavy Duty) depending on your weight, and adjust the shocks correctly. If your typical rider/luggage load is >200 lbs, you want the Heavy Duty shocks, if <200 lbs, go for the Standard Duty.

Also, many people here like to "slam" their bikes with shorter shocks. Shorter shocks always equal a harsher ride due to the fact that they have less travel. Progressive shocks come in 2 different "spring rates", with the smoother, less harsh rate, being shocks 12.5" and longer.

I run the 12.5" HD and love them.

The 412's are better than the stock shocks in my opinion. I weigh about 190lbs.

The progressive 418s ( standard ) on my 97 XLC rode GREAT compared to the stockers, night and freakin' day imho. I weigh about 170 necked and ride solo. The 418s also raised the XLC about one inch, which I like. I got the 418s on eBay for $160.00.
