Rocker box cover gaskets.

Rocker box cover gaskets.
Hi,
Has anyone changed the rocker box gaskets?
I'm just wondering if there is anything particular to
take into consideration besides tightening the bolts to the right torque?
BTW, I changed the transmission oil the other day and tightened the
bolts of the clutch inspection cover according to the Maintenance manual (Clymer)
In my opinion, the torque was a bit on the lower side... Should I use Loctite
or any other threadlocker?

RE: Rocker box cover gaskets.
I used Locktite on the cover when I replaced the stock cover with chrome. But I guess I used too much. When I went to change the tranny oil, I couldn't get the cover off. So, I had to just add the oil through the primary chain adjustment cover. So, I dunno. Maybe I used too much locktite? It was the blue, never had that type of problem with Locktite Blue before.

Replacing the cover gaskets isn't a huge deal, but there are a few steps involved.
To start with you need to remove the gas tank, which in itself is a little bit of a project if you haven't gone through the procedure before. From what I recall you also have to remove the coil from the front cylinder, and you will also need to remove the breather valves.
Not a major project, but you should have either a HD or Clymer manual and review all the steps before jumping in.
As far as the derby cover, I don't use the blue sealer on them. Normally I just tighten the bolts in rotation until they are good and 'snug'. Guess I could use a torque wrench on them, but it's just a pressure fit cover.

Thanks.
I already removed the tank once when I changed the spark plugs. There are two plugs per cylinder on my Sporty
so it is impossible to change 'em all without removing the tank.

Changing the gaskets is no big deal. Why are you changing them? Leak? My motor (06) has got little breather filters that also have to be removed... one torq screw, no biggie. But, I forgot to put the filters back in. Oh well, not ripping into it again for that. I've got a k&n type filter on the bottom of my Forcewinder anyways...

RE: Rocker box cover gaskets.
Yes, in 1998, Harley put the dual plug heads on the XL 1200 S model.
They also skipped the waste-ignition on this model by installing an ignition module
which controls the sparks of all four plugs separately for each cylinder instead of firing them all at once,
with one piston on the exhaust stroke
The cams and exhaust were also upgraded on this model.
The "sound, vibes and shaking", typical for Harleys suffered somehat
from these changes, but the performance improved. Not that much, tho....
I think they could have upgraded the a/c as well, but I guess it was a cosmetic
issue...
