Default Paintin' the Nightster Engine

Ok, both the GF and I aren't big fans of the grey engine on her Nightster and I've got some time off between Christmas and New Years, so I figured I'd get after painting it black. I know I will be investing some time masking off stuff so I want to do it right the first and ONLY time I am going to do this.

Who has done it and what type of paint did you use? Did you use satin or flat paint?? I know HD sells the paint, but I feel I can get a great durable finish with something that doesn't cost as much. I've been thinking either header paint or BBQ paint. I don't think the engine gets hot enough to require either paint but I want to be on the safe side and do it right the first time.

Pics would be cool too!!

Thanks in advance!!

Either bbq or engine paint works. as far as color is rather up to you. flat black shows alot more than a satin or gloss though as far as dirt. just make sure it is good and clean first.

Yeah, the more research I do, that keeps coming up. May end up springing for the HD paint, that way I know what I am getting and the end result will look good. I was just trying to steer around the price.

I've used vht alot. Just do the heat cycles. Though IMO vht flat black looks like **** after it clears the gloss almost looks satin after cure

I used the VHT high temp Wrinkle Plus on the Sportster engine. Flat black but gives it a textured look. Just spray it on heavy, let dry and apply a second coat. Has held up really well, and is easy to touch up when I bump things against it, like putting the pipes back on.

I like a one color engine because it makes the chrome parts stand out. The Low and the Nightster both have that multi-color thing going on. Strange......

Have you checked out ( Nightster Winter Makeover) thread. Its way more involved than what your doing, but might give you a few ideas for painting your engine.

I used the wrinkle black from HD and love how it turned out. I used a little over half the can but I didn't paint the entire engine. The paint matched the jugs perfectly and has held up perfectly. Make sure you scrub the heck out of it before you paint. Here's a pic...
