Default 97 xl1200c exhaust w/crossover

is the crossover pipe really needed?...dont really like the look

Yes, it helps performance, especially low and mid range.

I'm sure others can elaborate on the details.

Agreed with John. Unless you go with a 2-1 exhaust, you'll be hard pressed to beat the stock headers with slip-ons.
