Default 883 1200 questions

So this winter I found a good deal on some 88' 1200 jugs with Wiseco pistons, so my winter project has become tearing the bike down, fresh paint on everything, and a 1200 conversion. I have a couple of questions even thoguh I've read a ton of threads on this forum (you guys are awesome) I just want to confirm a few things. For starters, all I'm looking for is more low end power (the more the better), and only a mild increase in high end power. I'm not terribly interested in going any faster (top MPH) than a stock 883.

1. The pistons are Wiseco 4531ps, and from what I found they are an older line that was discontinued, but were designed for the 1200 conversion using the 883 heads. Can anybody confirm this?

2. Ignition, I've heard a lot of people recommend a ton of different ignitions, my question is, can the timing on the 883 stock ignition be adjusted for this application, or is it just not going to work?

3. Cams, I've read a couple forums (that I can't seem to find now :'( ) that say for low end power the stock cams and valves work, others insist that you must use a new cam. Confirmation? What will the stock cams do?

4. Valves, From what I've found the valves can be left alone fro starters, and I can come back to them when I have more time and money. How much will that impact performance?

5. Spark Plugs, I read about dual plugging sporty's, but I found one forum member (different forum) that had some pretty decent reasons why dual plugs aren't ever really necessary. Any thoughts on that?

Thanks a ton guys.

I can say that because you are still using the 883 transmission, you will have the same top speed, you will just get there faster.
I bought mine with the conversion done so other people can answer your other questions better.

All you need is the jugs/pistons.
the rest will work fine .
do the heads ( relieve them ) to get about 190 cranking compression .

spark, valves, plugs, carb, gearing will work fine ...enjoy

the 1200 kit will work fine and run good..you don't need to change the ignition, but if you do it will run better as the 1200 has different spark advance curve I went with this one and it works great http://www.jpcycles.com/product/730-577 ..cams are not worth the money without bigger valves....you may want to replace the front pulley/sprocket with the one on a 1200 to make better use of the extra power, but remember if you do you will throw off the speedo, but before you do ride it like it is, you will prolly find you like it just fine ... I say, for a cheap upgrade that adds a bunch of power, that it is a good way to go...Oh, and buy cometic gaskets, they are the best...also, just skip the duel plug head set up, just more to go wrong and no more power (well maybe a little)..

From a recent ad on Ebay:

"Wiseco Piston set, 1200 Big Bore Kit K1628
1986 to 1997 1200 Sportster Conversion STD.
Mfg#: K1628
Ref#: 16-2228
Harley 883 Kit
4531PS-2
Rings 3504XC
#10167AG/465X CW20/S530"

Which suggests that kit is for a 1986 to 1997 bike. If in doubt contact Wiseco!

I love you guys, thanks for the quick replies. I just took the jugs off today to lighten the base a bit before I take that off. Going to clean and powder the frame this winter. I am really looking forward to riding again with the new set up.

mrfikser, is the Dynatek 2000i Ignition programmable? It mentions 8 preset curve, but I also saw another ad for a USB cable (extra $100). If it is, anybody have good maps for it?

I don't know if it is programmable (can't remember) if it is I don't know why you would need to.. .It comes with direction on which curve setting to use.. basically you just set it according to the directions and if you get ping on accelleration you set it back one position...if it runs good on the first setting you can try the next more agressive setting and so on..it only adjusts the spark timing curve through the rpm band....the other setting *** is for duel fire etc.

Hey Guys, update, I found a decent deal on the 2000i ignition so I went with it. My bike is currently striped to the bones for a powder coat (I bought a powder coat system from eastwood for school, and now its mine ). I hope to have it up and running for the early spring rides. Thanks for all the help, I'll throw some pics up one of these days.
