Default 2011 Nightster Oil change

I'll be helping my son do the first engine and primary oil change on his Nighster next week. I haven't done Sporty in about 20 years. What is the engine oil capacity and also the primary oil capacity? (or fill level) FWIW, it's a 2011 1200cc model.

Also, will I be able to use the same Red Line synth primary oil in the Sporty that I use in my Street Glide?

I put three quarts in the oil bag and one in the primary. Your favorite primary oil will work fine in the primary ( I personally use ATF) just remember to warm up the engine for a few minutes before draining the tank to make sure any sumped oil is pumped back up into tank... else you risk over-filling.

2.5 in the bag will help keep the oil from puking out the A/C.

This

3.0 is too much. Mine pukes zero oil and my intake is as clean as one with external routed breathers with 2.5 added.

Kinda interesting the requirements of an oil change in regards to capacity. My 08 calls for 3 quarts, dry capacity. The service manual, spells out mathematically, 4 oz. for the filter, plus 2.5 qts. for the bag. That leaves a difference of 12 oz. Kind of alot to puke out the air cleaner.

A factory new, dry motor and oil system holds 3.6 quarts.
A standard oil change only drains what's in the oil tank, not what's in the rest of the oil system.
Draining the engine oil tank does not drain the whole system. Yes, it's designed that way and OK.

While 3 quarts will fill the oil tank to the top mark on the dipstick, many owners over the years have learned that running the oil level half way between the top and bottom marks on the dipstick reduces oil puking from the head breathers.
Half way between the marks on the stick typically = 2.5 quarts, plus 4oz more for the filter.
