Default Very Dirty Air Filter at 1400 miles?

I bought a 2013 Iron 883 one month ago from a dealer with 1,000 miles on it. Tonight I removed the stock air cleaner to install a K&N replacement and the "old" filter was extremely dirty and had a little solid matter (bugs, etc) stuck in it as well. So here's my thing: While I'm even more grateful I'm replacing it now, I'm concerned that the dealer may not have indeed done the 1,000 mile service as I was told they did, which calls for the filter to be inspected and cleaned. They assured me twice that they did the 1,000 mile. But I've put 400 miles on it in the last month and find it hard to believe that the filter was cleaned or inspected. Any thoughts? https://www.hdforums.com/g/picture/792175

The air filter was dirty.

The Horror.

They said they preformed the service. What`s the big deal, the bike has 1400 miles on it. It doesn`t need anything at 1000 miles.

Check the oil and move on.

How often should I change the air filter on my 883? Clean or change? I know it depends how dusty your enviroment is.

Hey steelpix, that was part of my surprise and part of the reason for my post. I believe the manual calls for replacement at 5,000 miles, but the condition of mine at 1400 makes me think otherwise. If you go ahead and pop in a K&N replacement (HD8834), you won't have to worry about it really.

It's all in your owners manual! Service intervals are 5,000 miles, clean or replace as required. To the OP, read your darned manual! The air filter doesn't get serviced or need it until 5k miles, unless you ride in very dirty conditions. As Dan says, move on!
