Default 1,000 Mile Service

My local dealer is charging $405 for the 1,000 mile service. An independent shop that's closer to home quoted me $225 for the same service, they said they follow the checklist and provide all the needed documentation.

Isthere any requirement or preference that the dealer perform the 1,000 mile check or can I have the other shop do that service ?? Any cautions about future warranty problems etc ?

The price difference is really hard to swallow for what is largely and inspection & fluid change

Thanks

If you can't do it yourself, use the indy. The dealers will bend you over a pipe and rape you till you can't walk.

You just bought a new bike! I've owned enough of them over the years, including my Sporty, a few of which have needed work at that point, including the same new Sporty. That work will be done by your dealer under warranty. An indy will charge for all work he does and you may not even discover that something ain't quite right. Having been buying new bikes since 1968 I've always had that first service done by the dealer - it's cheap insurance!

I bit the bullet and took mine to the dealer (although they only charged $295 for the service). My rocker boxes were leaking, so they fixed them under warranty. I'll go with a local indy once I'm out of warranty, but for now I saved myself a few hours of aggravation. Also, disposing of the used fluids around me is a giant pain in the ***, so there is something else I didn't have to deal with.

$405 seems steep for the 1k service. I wouldn't hesitate to use the indy. As long as they're providing documentation everything was performed like you stated, there will be no warranty issues should something arise.

Yep...I got hit w/ the 400 dollar 1k service on my shared cvo softail.

I was just breaking it in so this wasn't my "home" dealer.

My home dealer would have charged about 320 tho but didn't want to wait as I was in Western Colorado 1200 miles from home base.

But I still feel taken advantage of by that price...

I don't feel so bad about the 1k...lots of stuff they check....that's how I justify it.

but I do feel they took advantage of me as I told them I was travelling and I asked the service manager if they could "fit me in"....and fit me in they did!

400 for a 1k! geez

Like all motor vehicles these days these bikes are complicated. Mine will be serviced by the dealer. Cheap insurance. Plus I want the best for my cycle given that keeping it running right is literally a matter of life and death.
