You need to compress the diaphragm spring well enough past the c-clip groove so you can push the spring seat down and install the c-clip by hand. If you are installing a higher rate diaphragm spring this may be more challenging. It can also be complicated by the fact that a new clutch pack will be thicker than a worn one.

It's quite simple with the tool.
This is what it looks like before the compressor tool is attached. The spring seat is what you can see sitting on the diaphragm spring. Note its orientation.
Here I have the c-clip shown. This goes on top of the spring seat. You can put this on after the tool is installed since it has a gap.
And here is the tool compressed down. You push it far enough that you can push the spring seat down past the groove where the c-clip resides. Then you can put the c-clip in easily and release the spring. Voila!
