You need to compress the diaphragm spring well enough past the c-clip groove so you can push the spring seat down and install the c-clip by hand. If you are installing a higher rate diaphragm spring this may be more challenging. It can also be complicated by the fact that a new clutch pack will be thicker than a worn one.

I guess I need to get a special tool in order to compress it. I'm going to call a couple local shops and see what I can come up with. I thought I would be able to do it by hand some how.. this explains a lot

If you've been trying this without the compression tool, I'm impressed!

It's quite simple with the tool.

This is what it looks like before the compressor tool is attached. The spring seat is what you can see sitting on the diaphragm spring. Note its orientation.

Here I have the c-clip shown. This goes on top of the spring seat. You can put this on after the tool is installed since it has a gap.

And here is the tool compressed down. You push it far enough that you can push the spring seat down past the groove where the c-clip resides. Then you can put the c-clip in easily and release the spring. Voila!

So I'm guessing you do not have a service manual, as that clearly explains how a clutch replacement is performed. For about $50 you can buy the compression tool on Ebay ... snag a service manual while there.

$50-$70 depending on where you pick it up.

Run1fsr is correct, this procedure, and the tool, is clearly explained in the service manual.

Here's a very good sticky, with step by step and pictures.

https://www.hdforums.com/forum/sport...t-writeup.html

also in this sticky are some idea's on how to make you're own tool, worked for me when my pressure plate broke.

the book you want is the HD version of the service manual for your bike.
