Default Avon Cobra vs. Dunlop Elite 3

I just replaced my Dunlop Elite 3 front (120/70 21) and stock Dunlop rear (180/65 16) on my 13 SG with Avon Cobras. After a couple hundred miles, thought I would give a little review.

When I first installed the 21 inch wheel with Dunlop E3, my first thought was that the front end felt heavy. Low speed turns and fast corners required a heavy push on the bars. Low speed turning and braking sucked, the bike felt as if it wanted to tip. I thought maybe I lowered the front too much with the Progressive drop-in springs and thought about increasing the spacer from 1/2 inch to 1 inch at some point. I also noticed cracks in the tread pattern that developed within a thousand miles.

A couple of days ago I installed the Avons and the first thing I noticed that the heavy feeling was gone. Not just "better", but GONE. Turning requires very little effort both at low and high speed. On high-speed sweeps, I no longer have the feeling that the bike wants to "stand up". The bike stays leaned over and steady almost on it's own.

I've always had a feeling the the load rating on the E3 was not high enough for use on a bagger, so the fact that the Avon is rated for 100 lbs more is most likely what made the difference in handling.

Just my two cents.

I'm a long-term fan of Avon tyres for my Harleys. Do check their website for correct pressures, as they are often higher than in the owners manual.

The only down side to the Avon's is the mileage you will get especially out of the rear. It is a much softer tire than the Dunlop (stock or otherwise) and will stick like glue wear fast.

Ran the Avons on my softtail and loved them, but as was said, they are a softer tire and you wont get the same miles out of them.

As Graham has said. Go to there website and start with there pressures. Much higher
I changed over to Avon cobras on both my 98 ultra and my 2012 ultra. Big difference in ride, handling. Have bout 5500 on the 2012 tires look good. They are super in wet. Think they just might be better than the bikes. Lol. I find myself shoving the 98 into corners now. Fun
Also liked 589.00 for all 4 tires on 2 bikes!!

I have had dunnies, cobras, and now metz 880s. Like the Avons best; despite a few thousand miles ess out of the rear.

I just put American Elite tires on front and back of my 13 SGT. I got 2100 miles out of stockers. I tell you what, the AE tires are way better. They GRAB in turns and give a much smoother ride. The bike feels a little more top heavy, but I feel like I have more control over the bike.

Avons on the Dyna, and will be Avons on the street glide! The dunlops are WAAY to slick! Like everyone said, the avons are softer, so less miles. BUT they ride a lot better! You can feel the difference as soon as you ride it the first time!
