Wait til you get a 70MPH rock hit a cheap aftermarket china ABS bag. You'd never find all of the pieces. I prefer glass and am also going with TopShop. ABS is a fine material but good luck finding bags on the market that match HD quality.

I doubt you'll need to worry about any quality bags like Top Shop. The great thing about glass bags are they can be repaired if you take a spill. ABS bags are just trash if they get damaged.

i put an old set of bags on my '88 heritage. the bags were probably from the '70s. i sanded the bags, primed and painted. a week later i had cracks show up all around the lip of the bag lid. i sanded them down again and painted again. same show. i had to get another set of lids to solve the issue. i dont know what caused the cracks, so speculate away.

He claims that if I do long rides, that the vibrations from my bike would cause the fiberglass to begin to spider crack. He said at the least the paint would start to show stress cracks. He said the ABS bags do not have this issue. I have never heard of this nor read anything about it here on this forum.

I told him I thought that I read somewhere that the ABS bags have an oil that weeps from the bags well after they have been produced causing issues with paint later down the road. He disagrees with this statement.

Is he correct about the fiberglass having issues with stress cracks or paint spider web cracking? I’m sure some of the cheaper bags might show this more than the high end bags.
Thanks
Rick
Top shop bagger products are the best on the market hands down! yes they are fiberglass but the method used is vacuum infused not rolled their bag are not cheap mesh fiberglass either also Topshop oven cures all parts to prevent shrinkage down the road. you can literally take a sledge hammer to Top shop bags and they will not crack or break try that with abs plastic and those bags are down.

Yes I agree with what he said that over time cracks will show - a long time but it will happen. Doesn't matter if its a car like a corvette or a boat or even fibreglass moulds for making parts. It also deteriorates over the long term, talking 40 years but the point is it doesn't look like new for 39 then falls apart at 40 (like some women I know).

I have a 73 Electra-Glide with OEM bags made of whatever material HD was using back then. They are in remarkably good shape with zero cracks. The bags on my 73 seem more rigid and heavier than the ones on my newer Ultra.

They are double-skinned moulded glass-fibre, similar construction to the original bags on my 1990 Evo, which are also in remarkably good shape.

All plastic will fail. I'd rather have fiberglass with spider cracks than ABS in pieces.

I just got a set of Bad Dad injected molded fiberglass bags and they feel way more substantial than the stock ABS bags. I guess we'll see as time goes by
