Default compensator or starter clutch

Have same issue with my 09 electraglide. Only 16k on it. When hot the starter sounds like it is about to detonate. Grinding and nasty noises. The first thought was the compensator so I decided to contact a couple of Baker Drivetrain dealers in Buffalo and get a new Baker compensator. These were decent lads and told me that if it does it only when hot it is more likely the starter clutch. Hot engine being tight and all that. If it did it most times or all the time when starting it would more likely be the comp. Going to install an "all *****" starter clutch for about 69 bucks first and see what happens. Just passing it on. Then go with the new Baker product if it persists.

Hi guys , Just had exactly the same issue, Grinding horrible noise on Hot starts now and again but becoming more frequent. I'd had the standard compensator replaced with the SE version a couple of years ago due to the 'Bang' on start up. Anyway starter clutch replaced , problem solved, turns over better cold as well now. According to the HD Tecs If its a grinding noise on Hot starts only its the starter clutch, possible bad clutch caused by extra strain with different cams, mines a 96 motor. Also check your auto decompressors are switched on via the ECU. Apparently its not uncommon for them to find them not switched on from new on the 103 engines. No idea if its true but thats what they say.
