Default 97 Road King Transmission question...........

Turns out my 97 Road Kings transmissions second gear is making all kinds of noise so I am trying to find out what other model years are compatible. I found a nice low mileage 2005 Softail 5 speed and was hopping it would change out with out much modification. Any information regarding this swap would be appreciated.

The 5 speed gearset out of the 05 will work use your old shift drum though.

Default Thank you.

Thanks for the Welcome and the Fast Reply, but what I am trying to find out is whether or not I can swap out the the entire 05 Softail transmission, case and all since I don't have the specialty tools required to rebuild the tranny now in it.

no

the touring and dyna tranny cases incorporate the engine oil tank beneath....the softail tranny is not a direct swap.

the smart thing to do is to look at swapping in a new gearset- the gears come out as a "cassette".
riders who upgrade to a 6 speed often have their old gearsets for sale ( craigslist)...or YOU could swap to a 6 speed with either close ratio ( 1:1 final) or an overdrive 6th - .86 Final
