Default Stripped front axle nut help...

I'm guessing my torque wrench wasn't working when installing my front wheel and I must have over tightened and stripped the axle nut..threads seem fine on the axle which I am hoping are ok..what do u guys think..do you think I could have damaged axle?? Thanks greatly

I followed directions stating torque 50-55 while a 7/16 bit is in hole on other side..the bit never even got close to touching and the nut stripped!?

I could be wrong, I leave the two nuts lose on the bottom of the right fork. tighten the axle bolt on the left fork (the axle will bottom out in the left fork) and then pull the right fork out until it touches the drill bit or whatever you use for 7/16" and tighten the two nuts.

Take the axle out and inspect it closely. If needed use a thread chaser to clean up axle and buy a new axle nut along with a new torque wrench.

What year / model bike are you working on? My front axle spec is 70-75 ft-lbs. sounds like your torque wrench is a tad out of spec. I personally have never used a 7/16 drill bit, wooden dowels work just as good and you won't risk scratching your forks. You're probably going to need another axle nut. Can't remark on the axle without seeing it.

My guess is it took 200 or or ft lbs to strip that length of threads. It's possible that you also damaged the bearings since they loaded on the axle shoulder. It's next to impossible without gages to check axle thread. Even then, it's probably stretched and even gages are not going to show that. Bet a dealer would replace axle, nut and bearings.
