Ok to install ohlins shocks upside down?

You should have been given spacers with the shocks that are about 1/4". This should move the shock away from the backrest mount (shock mount) to allow it to be installed and clear the shock. You will have to shim out the bottom accordingly to keep the shock running square. The shims required may not all be the same top and bottom to achieve this.

Not one like that, no. I'm guessing that's a passenger backrest, as all the rider backrests I've seen mount under the seat to the fender. My passengers have a Tour Pak to rest their backs on.
Call Howard about the upside-down mounting. My inclination is to say that it won't work well for the shocks, but I wouldn't bet on it.
