My guess is that the reduced oil chamber between the piston and the bottom of the lifter (less oil) causes more noise on some lifters . If I were you, I would set them at 2 1/2 turns. Go by your lifter instructions but most will want the preload set at the mid point of the piston travel. If they are noisy after it gets hot, go another flat or 2. I think some lifters respond differently than others. Make sure you do this when the engine is cold (sat overnight). Keep us updated on this.
Thanks. This is the type of info I was looking for. 2 1/2 turns will be about the min load for the woods lifters. I will start there and see how it sounds.

Are you using Woods Directional lifters? Knight Prowlers? If so, they recommend preload set to .120-.130. 3 turns would put you at .125.

I have S&S lifters and quickie pushrods they are 24 also. S&S recommends 24 flats (four full turns). I found them to be a bit noisy. I did 28 flats and they quieted right down. Be sure your motor is COLD not cool and make sure you are on TDC compression stroke.

Good luck.

S&S quickie pushrods are not 24. They are 32 per inch. 24 flats on the S&S is .125.

Yes they are, memory isn't what they used to be.

I stand corrected.

So I backed them off 1/2 turn each. At idle it seams to be better. I will take it for a spin tomorrow and see how it is. There set to 3 turns. I know woods cams are noisy but just want to make it the best it can be.
