Default Bike just died.

I'm certainly no wrench, and not an electrical guru, so let's not beat up on me with this problem I'm having. Thanks.

2003 Road King fuel injection.

The other day coming home, bike sounded like it was going to die, if I let the rpm's go to normal, kept the rev's up, that was my gut feeling.

Today ready to go to bike night, start up the bike, idles, wife get's on the back, the bike dies. Nothing, no electrical nothing. Let the bike sit for a minute, try it again, starts up, thinking it was nothing, then dies again. There goes bike night.

So, I try a short ride up the street (without the wife), about 1/4 mile up the road, rpms feel weird, turn around head for home, bike dies out, and I coast into the garage.

Sit's for a minute, now I'm pissed, because heading out in the morning, not on the bike for 5 days. I'll be thinking what the hell is wrong with it.

So, I'm thinking battery, but why does it die out while running. Suspect loose battery connection, but would that make it die out?

While running, all lights, turn signals, horn, all work.

Last time I had a bug, down in Florida, was a relay that a good mechanic Mugsy found for me. To far from St Pete's this week to take there again.

Any help appreciated. I'll be watching the thread for the next 5 days, thanks.KL

is it hard to start? Is there enough current in the battery? Loose connection, fuse or relay could also be possible. Have you put it on a charger or tender? I would double check and re-seat any component you can get to/

Good luck - sucks when your baby is sick.

Check battery terminals are clean and tight, and nothing obvious shorting them.

Crank sensor, the main breaker under the seat, loose connection.

If all the easy stuff(connections, etc) is in working order my next guess would be voltage regulator. Mine just went out and drained my battery. If the voltage regulator goes out your bike will not stay running. That would be my guess.

Outside of connections and stuff that should be easy to find, it should either be a bad battery, voltage regulator, or stator. If all your connections check out, I would test the voltage regulator. There are several threads on here about that, but basically you just unplug the connector on the gear shift side ofthe regulator and see if AC current is coming from the motor. If not, your stator is bad. If it does have AC coming from the plug, it's either your battery or your voltage regulator.

That's not the end all of info on the subject, but it should help you with troubleshooting.

If it's not a charging issue(the battery's not flat) then I would check the connection to the throttle position sensor on the throttle body. Make sure it's secure, dry and not corroded.

Agree with Harleylvr. Either battery, voltage regulator, or stator. I've seen bad battery's do some wierd ****. Like still start, but make the bike run horrible. I'd start with that and keep your fingers crossed. After that, it's on to the other two and more $$.
Good luck, let us know.

So, reading these. As I was riding, bike died, no lights, absolutely coasted in. Waited a few minutes got ignition, turned over and over then started, then died, no ignition lights, nothing. Going away is killing me. Hope some of this helps

Battery connections. Maybe not at the battery but down the line.
