If it's to be the "forever" bike, go with the 2017. Not that the '16 is bad in anyway, but the 2017 is better in more ways than just engine stuff. I test rode a '17 last fall and was very impressed. Very smooth, more gutzy engine, but the suspension was the big takeaway for me. My local dealer has some good deals on '16's. If I hadn't test ridden the '17, I could be swayed for the outgoing model. After the test ride, it is no contest.

I thought long and hard about a 16 ultra versus the 17 ultra. Having had a few bikes in the past that I spent a lot of money on I decided that my next HD will stay stock other than a few comfort pieces. I just want to ride and not be on the cutting edge. Because of the huge discount I went with the 16, picked it up Christmas Eve. Plan to keep this bike around for awhile and couldn't be happier.
I think the 103 is great for the touring bikes. If I wanted to hot rod a dyna I would get the M8 when the dyna gets it.

I had a '16 RK in velocity red and traded it in on a '17 in hot rod red metallic.

IMO the new version is about a 40% better bike once ALL of the updates are taken into consideration. The M8 motor may be the one thing that people talk about, but there are numerous other nice changes as well.

For your situation I would say that $2,500 more for the '17 would be fair before considering any paint premium extra cost.

40% better seems like alot. Other than the engine, what other updates are significant?

I own a 17 and test rode the 16. My opinion is the same as yours, not a significant enough difference to justify $5,000. However I see that you are considering the base model. As MKGUITAR stated earlier, the ABS is worth it and I totally agree. I would recommend you search for a 16 with ABS.

a mass produced motorcycle is never an "investment", but a money loser.

the secondary value of the twincam is reduced by a greater factor compared to the new M8 motor.

but then, I'd wait for any bugs to be worked out of a new motor...so maybe at '18?

the ABS is really good, and I would not get another bike without

Fixed it for ya.

APPLES to apples its a$1500 msrp difference ... must have is ABS, and cruise...i think the options are ABS and security.....is the 17 offered at msrp and the 16 discounted? if thats why its that much cheaper id take the 16 i dont think the new motor is that big of a deal....as i side note... the guy that trades his bike in every year.... i would not listen to a thing he had to say...he's a renter
