Default Round 2 - Primary/trans mainshaft seal repair

I have been debating whether I should try this repair myself, again, or take it to someone. Well, here goes, I'm going to get some parts tomorrow and tear into it - AGAIN! That damn leak is really pissing me off. I know I can do this.

Having just helped a friend do a trans gearset swap, I'll say the primary side isn't as difficult and complicated as it seems. If you have the manual and the tools, go for it!

I have the manual and the tools. I went through this primary three times trying to get it to stop leaking. I finally put some red dye in my trans to rule that out and damnit, the trans is leaking.

check the splines on the pulley and on the main gear. if they're worn even slightly, the trans will leak. give the splines on the main gear the fingernail test to see if you can feel any kind of step on the spline. it will need to be replaced if you can feel any wear.

The splines will cause the tranny to leak? Are you referring to a run-out or wobble in the mainshaft? When I had it apart previously, I don't remember noticing any wear.

Possible transmission main drive gear bearing is going out and taking out the seal.... I guess when you pop the seal out you can verify if the bearing is toast or not.

yes it will leak. the pulley will wobble if there's any play between the pulley and main gear and that will cause the quad seal to leak.

Simple it is round two. Take it to someone that knows what they are doing. Should have gone there the first time.

I just did mine for the first time, and no leaks.I ordered a oem seal and the james primary gasket set. I did notice a difference in the oem seal and the james seal. I used the oem.
