From personal experience I know Metzeler's make a real good tire, and I'm hearing good things about the Dunlop Elite 3. Continentals have a decent rep, never heard anything one way or another about Michelin, but that's a non-issue with me because I won't buy their tires anyway.
I probably won't go back with the stock tires; they have good traction but they sing when leaned over in a turn and they track lines on the road like a friggin houndog. It'll probably be Elite 3's for me.

I have 5200 miles on my stock tires & the rear still looks reasonably new.

I've got about 8500 on my stock dunlops, starting to get smooth, I was wondering about Avons or Michelins, I hate the dunlops, they do track like an dog.

Had Avons on my Indian Scout. The rear only lasted 6K miles. They may be a little softer than some of the others. I can't remember the specific brand of Avon it was.

I put Avon Venoms on my Fat Boy. They were great. Never locked the rear wet or dry, more than I can say for my Dunflops. I will putthe Venomson my SG when I need to. I would say it will depend on what is important to you, good grip or longevity? Personally I prefer good grip when I have to go into a turn in the wet. $200/tire every 6-8K.......a small price to pay.

I just purchased new Metzler ME880 Marathons for the front and rear of my '03 Electraglide Classic. Went with a 130 on the rear rather than a 140. The 130's came stock on '03 and earlier. I checked the belt clearance and believe the 140 would rub. I read a post about someone who tried a 140 on an '03 Glide and it rubbed like crazy. I figure I have run 130's, fully loaded on cross countries and never felt under tired. I have always run Dunlops...but never get more than 7500 mileson a rear. The stock front dunlop just turned 20,000 miles. Now you know why I am buying new tires. I have run Metzlers on my BMW 90/6 for years but that bike weighed 300lbs less than my Glide. I am concerned about the sidewalls though. The Dunlops are supposed to hold the bike upright even when flat. That is why HD recommends them.

I wouldn't worry about the Metzler. I stuck a 3" nail in the rear of one and rode 18 miles down the interstate trying to figure out why the bike felt funny. It took a while for the air to leak out ( even with a tube and laced wheels ). I stopped about a 1/4 mile from the exit. Saw the tire was about flat, rode the rest of the way to the exit and into the truck stop.
