Default Oil temp gauge---no worky

I installed a oil temp gauge (HD) about five months ago. It is installed in the adapter next to the oil filter. The gauge stopped working after about 5k miles. Question, is there a way to test the gauge or sensor to find out which is not operating? If there is will somebody tell me how. Or do I just have to purchase a new gauge? HD only gives a 90 day warranty on the part. Thanks

Where would the ground be? The only thing I have done recently is change the oil. would this ground be where it connects to the gauge? So I would have to take the fairing off. Or is this something down by the sensor?

The gauge works by resistance. If you ground out the sender wire, the gauge should peg out. Remove the sender wire at the oil pan, hook a jumper wire to it and tough it to any metal service. of course, have the ignition on. If the gauge doesn't peg out, then you have a problem with the gauge or wiring to it. Next, you need to remove the fairing and get to the gauge. Now do the same thing on the back of the gauge. Attach a jumper wire to the sender wire connection and ground it out. Now is the time that you can check if the gauge has a proper ground by using a jumper wire to ground. You should also check if the gauge is getting power. There are 3 wires on the gauge. Power, ground, and sender.

If you do it my way, you may not have to remove the fairing if the gauge pegs with the first test. The sender or the connection to it could be the issue. However, I doubt this since senders rarely quit working.

I agree that the ground could be the issue. If you follow this logic chain and do the tests, you will find out.

Hope this helps.

Actually, you wouldn't need to disconnect the sender wire from the oil pan connection. Just connect your grouding wire to it and touch the frame or motor. If you have to open the fairing, you just do a continuity check from the wires after you disconnect them from the guage back to the sender unit.

he didn't install the gauge in the oil pan. he has it at the oil filter adapter. take the sending unit and install it in the bung in the oil pan. it won't work properly where you have it now.

That's what I think,it belongs in the oil pan,it takes quite a few miles to finally start to register heat
