Default Checking Fork Oil

I have been in the search looking for the answer to this, but I didn't have any luck.

When the fork oil is considered to be at the proper level it is a certain distance from the top of the fork tube.

I read this distance is approx. 12" on a bagger.

My question is.... Is this 12" distance with the bike sitting on the ground with the weight on the forks or with the bike on a jack and the forks extended?

I know I could just put in the 10.8 oz's and call it good, but I want to make a tool to check from the top.

If someone could link me to the answer or give me the answer it will be appreciated.

Thanks a lot!!

The measurement is around 5", forks upright on the ground, compressed.
I can't give you an exact number, my manuals are at my shop.
But I do know your 12" number is way off.

Why do you feel you need to check the oil level on occasion?
If you have a leak, I assure you, you'll know it!

If you go through all the trouble to check it, you might as well change it.

No guys..I don't want to just check it I am changing the fluid and want to make sure I have the level correct.

Sorry, I didn't make that clear enough.

Maybe that 12" number that I read in the search was with the forks off the ground.

Thanks!

You can make one of the fork measuring meters pretty easily and you can mark it where it needs to be for the next time.

That's my plan Dawg.

I have the syringe and tubing and everything I need except the exact measurement from the top of the fork tube to the fluid.

If someone wouldn't mind looking in the service manual for these numbers it would sure help me out.

Thank you!
