Educate me on Stage1 vs 2 vs 3

I like to explain it like this...
Stage I: exhaust(can be full system or slip-ons), intake, fuel management
Stage II: stage I and cams...usually a big bore is done here too
Stage III: stage II and headwork
Stage IV: stage I and forced induction (turbo/super-charger). Cams/headwork are not necessarily needed here but to get the ultimate performance they are used. An example of a high end stage IV bike would be the current World's Fastest Bagger.

I think he means the actual kit from Harley that includes new jugs etc.. They are listed in the Screaming Eagle parts section. For example: taking a stock 96 stage 1 to a stage II 103 kit.

110% correct
Your stock Harley will run great, however, many people go to Stage 1 early, because of the sound and a little extra punch. Usually this will be enough. I am over 300#, and my wife is 160. Even on the (Stage 1) bike in the pic, fully loaded, we can still easily cruise at 80-90 MPH. I never felt the NEED to go to Stage 2, but each one of us is differant.
I have found that keeping it 100% Harley is essential to trouble free motoring. (see my sig).

you're pretty close. in harleys vernacular of stage 1,2, etc, you could look in the parts and accessories catalog and it's pretty well explained in there. the answer you get will likely depend on who's answering your question for a description of the stages. the short version of this is that the higher the stage, the more it's gonna cost, and the more performance you'll get.

.lot's of good reading here for me, beings I'm getting ready for a stage 1, but still at a cross road about the 2-1-2 cat header pipe, on my 10 ultra, some say replace it and some don't. any info on this? i planed on slip-on's, air kit, and tuner, and maybe a header pipe but i guess the cat header will kill the sound from the slipons, I'm lost here

Here's my take on the various Stage kits:
Any exhaust upgrade, AC, and either a tuner or HD download.
Stage I plus cam, displacement, and compression upgrade.
Stage II with higher compression (e.g. 10.5:1) and more radical cams.
Stage IV would then be Stage III plus aftermarket heads or headwork.
Stage I upgrade:
Slip on after-market pipe and high-flow air filter
Slip on after-market pipe and high-flow air filter
Stage II upgrade:
Full system exhaust, high flow air filter, and power commander
Full system exhaust, high flow air filter, and power commander
Stage III upgrade:
Same as Stage II with advanced engine mods/tweeks
Same as Stage II with advanced engine mods/tweeks
Stage IV would then be Stage III plus aftermarket heads or headwork.

I would say
Stage I: cold air intake/Fart can
Stage II: stg I plus JDM red painted valve cover and stickers and decals to match (10hp per sticker)
Stage III: stg II plus unpainted body kit and rims
Stage IV: stg III plus erl schieb neon paint and a spoiler at least a foot tall.
Stage V: carbon fiber hood and flame/lighting grafics and UNDERGLO
