When to replace primary chain??
My local wrench helped me adjust a few things on my 2003 FLHT over the weekend. When we checked the primary he pointed out that I need to replace the tensioner and also suggested replacing the primary chain too. I have 55,000 miles on the bike and ride it like I stole it. Is there a lifespan on a primary chain. Can anyone recommend a brand of chain? Thanks!

if the chain has loose and tight spots, if the chain is visibly worn.
the time to replace it would be when the tensioner is replaced ( if that is required) then you'll be paying for the chain and labor costs will be only a few dollars on top of the tensioner service
--- because the tech is already there, and has only to swap chains. the costs of gaskets, fluid etc is the same.
it sound like you have a good relationship with this tech- that is hard to find in this world- ask him which brand chain he suggests, and ask for a break down- how much more to do the chain.
If the answers seem right- then you know.
I had 2 evos wear the tensioner at about 50,000 miles.
Both of those have the same chain at 80,000 + miles & seem fine.
Both of my tensioners I replaced with the Hayden M6 tensioner which was about the best $80 I spent on the evos, much better downshifting, smoother low speed operation, ease of maintenence
