Inner Primary Housing Removal / Replace Shifter Rod Lever
#21
Sporty302,
You chose wisely not to use the Better Lever. Because it is stronger metal it chewed up my transmission shifter shaft. I checked the bots tightness regularly. So the primary had to come off and had to open up the transmission to replace the parts after about 9 hours of labor. That darn better lever sounded like good idea, not. That darn Better Lever has steps that does not does not match the lans and grooves on the shifter shaft. I used the cheap Harley shift lever. I do not want have to this again.

Replace Shifter lever on 1996 Road King
I just replaced the shifter lever after removing the primary for access. One would think that a small design change to add about 1/4 of an inch of clearance would allow you to remove the lever without removing the primary. I also had a problem getting the bolt started in the Dennis Kirk lever once it was on the shaft. I ran a tap through the bolt hole while it was on the shaft to cut away whatever was keeping the bolt from starting, It worked.
