I have a '96 FLHT, I have two issues.
1- the shift linkage is hitting the back of the primary and gouging it pretty good.
2- it's tough finding neutral
Either the trans lever has loosened or its in the process of stripping out.
Loosen the allen screw & push the lever back towards the trans
Tighten the allen screw & see if that fixed it
If the lever is still loose on the trans shaft that means its stripping
You can remove the allen screw & put a longer Gr8 screw there & crank it down, normally helps some.
Eventually you'll have to replace the trans lever & that requires loosening the inner primary to get the lever off.... crappy design by HD
Hopelly its the lever & not the trans shaft thats the problem
**** ain't lined up right. I'm guessing the shaft behind the inner primary might be loose. Probably have a shifter shaft seal that is leaking due to the galling as well. I just fixed a loose shifter on an 05 FLHTCSE and it in turn had a seal leaking because of the wobbling effect. Best thing to do is pull it down, fix the shifter and replace all the seals as you go.
