Default Voltage Regulator?

Hi all,

Riding down the road around 40 mph, Batt and Check Engine lights came on. Volt gauge drops to ~11 volts. Rev engine up, jumped back to normal. Last weekend, it happened again, took several rev's to bring the voltage back up. Fine since then.

Is me voltage regulator on it's way out? Bike always on a tender when not riding. OEM battery, regulator and stator. 53k miles.

TIA

Sounds like the beginning of the end of a battery, same thing mine did

The new Volt Regs are solid state & generally last a very long time w/o issues.
HD's Stators are a different story. Some last forever & others go out very early.
Its best to take your bike to a trusted shop & get both check out to the specs.
Im guessing stator but it could be either or both.

I'd agree with some more extensive troubleshooting, but I would definately start with the 5 year old battery, with 50K miles on it.

Hey Jason,

Thank you for your fast reply, as usual. I'm the one who email you last night regarding the "Airwing" horn cover. Order placed, ready for the hot and humid Indiana summer as you can supply them.

Will look into replacing the battery.

Don't discount the possibility of deeper issue such as the VR or stator like Fast Aire mentioned, just saying to start with the battery, given its age and service life. It'll be a few more days on those fans, supposed to get them back from paint today, then a couple days to assemble and package, probably ready to ship on the 5th.

Wow that long on an OEM battery.
The battery will be the easiest for your mechanic to check using a load checker.
A quick way to get an idea if anything is wrong with the stator is to smell the primary fluid. If it smells like burnt something or another, stator is likely out or going out.
With a voltmeter you can check your charging system/volt regulator. There are lots of posts out there for checking each. It is not difficult.
If you change batteries and go to an AGM battery, make sure you verify you battery tender/maintainer is meant to work with it. I found out the hard way that some older, name brand battery tenders (not trickle chargers) are not designed to work with AGM batteries.

No hurry, I understand you're busy. Enjoy your July 4th weekend.

Try the simple stuff first, like checking all connections/connectors for clean and tight. My last battery lasted 8 years (60K miles), and didn't fail, I just didn't trust it any more!

Check this thread out.

I replaced my stator and regulator at 70k. I went with the 3 stage cycle electric.
