I change every 5000 or once a year. I use synthetic. Currently it is Redline. When I run out it will be a less expensive oil that meets the recommended specifications (mainly because I have to order Redline and I'd rather buy oil locally. I don't have anything bad to say about Redline at all! (I'm thinking Quicksilver found in the marine section at your local walmart.)
Here in the Great White North, logistics can be an issue with many things. I'm into sport shooting, for instance, and because of recurring scarcities and high costs of shipping certain goods, I'll lay in reloadable pistol brass in lots of 5000 or more, same with bullets and 10-12 lbs of powders at a time. I'm now doing the same with motorcycle oil, buying a couple of cases a pop. Thing is, if you catch sale pricing and/or are getting bulk discounts the investment isn't a bad one. Your banker is giving SFA for interest on deposited money so forward buying of stuff you're bound to use and saving even 10% is better than you'll get guaranteed at the bank. My recent batch of Redline cost me $13.50/qt at Amazon so I'm good with it.
