Default Not enough oil

So today I changed the Primary oil and for the life of me I don't know how I did not buy enough oil, but I did not. I had one quart and about 2 or 3 ounces on top of that. The book calls for 38

Do you think it's worth it to open it back up and add the rest?

If it were me, yes, I would put in the 38 oz.

I would open it up and check the level then add as required. It's not hard or expensive.

With bike upright, check the level, it should just be up to the outside diameter of the outer clutch shell. Don`t overfill, but a little low won`t hurt a thing.

check your service manual.
i forget the exact wording at the moment but I think mine says as long as the oil is visibly touching the clutch hub the level is okay.

1 quart will do but, you can add up to 38oz. As long as you can see oil when you remove the derby cover,,,,, To each his own.

I'm at work and don't have the exact values in front of me. There are TWO different fill levels for the primary. One would be 'wet' fill' and the other would be 'dry fill'.

Wet fill would be the correct level used if all you did was drain the fluid.
Dry fill would be correct if you pulled primary chaincase cover, wiped it all out and installed new clutch frictions. The friction plates retain a LOT of oil, and there are various spots for oil to hide.

When I fill a chaincase for a fluid change, I put bike upright, look through derby cover hole, and make the oil touch the bottom of the clutch.

When I do a complete clutch change out... I use the recommended amount of oil, which at first looks overfilled, but once friction discs suck in some oil and get soaked, it eventually comes out fine.

Owners manual may only have the one level, but the service manual will list both levels.
