? on mileage indicator
Just returned from a 6495 mile trip across country and the (R) mileage indicator baffles the **** out of me. I found out, that if I fill the bike to the neck and then let it set for awhile, it will go down and I can add more gas. Is that normal?
Also: generally when I fill-up using the above technique, the total miles displayed is between 180 and 187. Sometimes, the friggin thing reads 210. Have no idea on why the difference.
any words of wisdom?

Same here on filling; I tell the wife to use her assets to wiggle the trike and I can usually get another quart in there. Or I use the handlebars if she's not along.
I think the electronics look at tank level and previous mileage and calculate an estimate, possibly based the mileage on the last tank, or the last so many miles, or since last started, or something similar, I'm not sure. I wouldn't know how else it would work, but that could account for the difference. I'm sure level indication for the tank isn't very precise.
The owner's manual says, cryptically:

On the first issue I have never experience that with 25 H-D's over the years.
On the second issue the distance to empty (R) changes to what your recent mpg experience is. If you were on a long ride with tail wind when you fill it up it will have a high R reading. If you were hot ******* it and fill up you will get a low value.
It is even possible to have the DTE rise while you are riding when it had a low value while riding in stop and go traffic and then hit the open road. When on long tours I have seen as much as a 20% difference in DTE when filling.
I ride with the R on when touring and I have seen it at 180 miles up to 220 miles. That reflects if I was getting 30 mph (running at 80 mph in S.D. and the 220 and 38 mpg running at 65 mph. I have done that for years and 10's of thousands of miles. I can know the mpg for the bike at each leg of the trip just by looking at the DTE when I fill up. I ride until the low fuel light comes on.
