The saga began with J Risk’s 2006 Harley-Davidson® FXDB Dyna™ Street Bob™ needing more squeeze to haul it down from Mach 1 safely. Stock did not do it for him. A long journey [History Here] but it is done! Well almost.

Jay wanted for his sled: [ul][*]Duel disks,[*]Stock Lace wheel,[*]no chrome, a stock look & ride height like it should be there from the factory in the beginning.[*]New Brembos on his 300mm rotors & use his same forks.[/ul]We started by examining what was there. We ordered a set of new V-Rod lowers for the caliper mounts. Stock 06 FXDB axle will fit, the internals do not. A set of cartridge Gold emulators & sprung correctly with performance linear springs. Machined the internals to mirror the stock FXDB fork length and ordered a set of new bushings & seals from HD.

While waiting I sent the lowers up to Final Touch Powder Coaters (HDF Member ~ so support your members!powdercoater) for a clear Coat of armor, bug juice be gone. Quick turn-around & an excellent job! Recommended.

Parts came in today and the moment of truth. We measured the length of the tubes to the center of the axle of the stock Dyna before disassembly. We assembled the forks with all parts in hand. Used premium racing fork oil. Ya, makes a difference! Than measured upon completion. Exactly the same. Put in the truck and brought it the my private shop where the R&D gets done and where I am alone. Next step:
Installed the axle spacers, and the wheel. Brembos bolt right up once adding a new 300mm HD Simi Floater to match original.

Spun the wheel and the brakes dragged. [ol][*]Loosened up the cap and axle. Let the wheel float.[*]First thing is to get the axle in line & parallel. I loosened the cap and that help free up the wheel. *One of the forks was higher than the other one. **** the lowers slightly and the diameter of the rotor amplifies the misalignment.[*]Moved the lower fork tube up and kept loosing & tightening the axle cap until the wheel rotated without brake pad friction.[*]The next was the spacers. I noticed that the MOCO does not care about exact dimensions.[*]I moved the axle over until the short spacer was tight against the leg and the axle nut was tight. HINT: You never pinch the legs together, they must hang relaxed, or you will get “Stiction.”[*]I loosened the axle nut and hit it with a fiber hammer, ½ a turn at a time than check the results by spinning the wheel. Make sure the rotors are in the center of the calipers and the wheel will spin free once it is parallel and spaced correctly.[*]In this case a new spacer must be made an additional 0.050” longer on the Right hand lower leg (nut) side .[*]The wheel spins freely. Do not let anyone tell you any differently ~ your wheel should spin freely, mine does on my FXR![/ol]Next is fabricating a brakeline Y manifold and brake lines out of stainless. Later…

60 days to change out fork internals, cut the springs (eesh) and machine a spacer......man, that's guy will be stoked to get his bike back when you finish up in 2-3 months.

Howard, this project is looking GREAT. You've overcome a lot of problems- some frustrations with parts from Harley Davidson taking weeks. And some very tricky internal mods on the fork tubes. It's lookin great, and I can't wait to have on the road again.Thanks. Jay Risk

 

I wish it was that easy as described by you. Unfortunately none of what you said was done as none of the parts you said to modify needed to be. I am sure once you post your modification there will be many people here would be flocking to your door. Feel free to post your modifications/manufacturing here. Maybe you also may have a dealership larger than Bruce Rossmeyer's Harley-Davidson to get your parts from which did take a very long time. Please re-read the post [History Here] slowly and you will see that except for one week of designing, tooling, programming, buying material, and figuring how to do it, the rest was waiting for parts.

I guess that you can do it much less time, I would be really interested in seeing your offering. Since I am the only one to do it from stock fork tubes and make them the stock length, I am happy to see many more people join in modifying members bikes for them. BTW did not we meet before when Mudpuddle questioned you about being a banned member. Your Dyna really looks nice, if you wish to drop on by & we put that thing on the track against my old FXR which is only 6 CI larger but you have a much higher revving motor than I + EFI should be a pretty good race. Lets see what you and I are both made of. Lets see if your choice in parts are a wise one. There would be no problem getting track time for the fun of it. Do you just talk or what do you have..bring it. I am available most hours for conference on this matter.

you did a great job. I did the same conversion on my 2007 Street Bob. First i wanted to go the same way like you and wanted to add VRSCA Lower Fork Glides on the original Fork Legs.
After thinking about the lot of work (rebuild and build the Fork Legs, new Oil, etc.) i decided to go an easyer way. I sold the original Fork Legs at ebay for 350,- Bucks and ordered the complete Fork Legs from the FXDF Fat Bob at Chicago HD (20% Discount). The price for each Fork Leg is there 255,20 Bucks. Part Numbers: 48623-08 & 48622-08. I recived the parts after 10 days here in germany. It was easy to change the Fork Legs.
The + points: The Fork has the same length, the lower Fork Gliders are still black, the Fork Legs work much better than theones from Street Bob cause they are filled withheavyer oiland there is no work on it.
I bought a complete pair of brembo calipers from ebay for 325,- Bucks. Some people offer them there after they changed the calipers into chromed ones.
