As of a few days ago, according to the Southern California Timing Association and the American Motorcycle Association, the groups that are responsible for the Bonneville Speed Week, due to heavy summer rains, the events have been cancelled for the year.

According to the event organizers, because of the summer rains, the salt flats received this year, and the reduced amount of evaporation, there is still entirely too much standing water for the riders and drivers to attempt record runs on. The organizers have searched the flats both high and low, and over the entire area, found only two and quarter miles of good salt. This sadly isn’t enough for a motorcycle to achieve the potential 400 miles per hour some would be going for.

The group has stated that these cancellations will hopefully not continue into the future. But with the drastic changes in our environment, and the presence of El Nino this year, more of these Speed Weeks could have the potential to be cancelled in the future.
