Can Harley Save Itself with a New Engine Layout?
Turns out, the Harley crowd isn’t too sympathetic about the V-twin. In fact, most folks miss the “different” engines H-D used to make. Even if they weren’t attached to the right bike.
“The irony is Harley learned the wrong lesson,”DM426 points out. “Yes, the V-Rod didn’t sell well. But the reason it didn’t sell wasn’t the engine, as the engine was good. It was the rest of the bike was poorly designed. If Harley would have put that engine in a decent bike I would have jumped on it.”
Still, there are a few folks who don’t want to see Harley give in and change their ways.
“Probably not,” admits maverick31210. “I wouldn’t buy anything newer than an Evo. I know it sounds weird in today’s world but I’m not a fan of this huge move to technology. I just want old **** that I can fix at home or on the side of the road. If I wanted tech and comfort, I’d get a Goldwing. And if I got a Wing, I might as well just get the Civic. Then graduate to the minivan, then have kids. But none of that sounds like fun.”
There are loads of great points and insights here. And it’s clear that Harley could probably do well by introducing at least one solid bike with a new, unique drivetrain to its lineup. But we want to know what you think! Head over here and catch up on this fascinating discussion, and be sure and chime in with your thoughts!
