Harley VR1000 Presents a Rare Superbike Opportunity

Harley-Davidson devoted countless resources and over a decade’s time trying to construct a winning AMA Superbike effort. That fact has somewhat fallen by the wayside over the years, and it’s one many folks aren’t even aware of. Yet five years of development went into building the bike you see before you: the Harley VR1000. And it’s an incredibly interesting piece of history with a story like no other.

We ran across this particular example because it’s actually for sale over on eBay. But that in itself is pretty amazing. Mostly because you rarely see these bikes today, whether for sale or not. Even better? This particular Harley VR1000, VIN #VR056K4, comes with a slew of spare parts and other goodies. It’s essentially like buying an entire turnkey Harley Factory superbike race team. Pit crew not included.

Obviously, such an effort won’t come cheap. Goodies like the factory carbon slipper clutch cost no less than $10,000 a piece, after all. And this Harley VR1000 hasn’t even run since 1997. Oh, and did we mention that these bikes didn’t exactly achieve much success in their day? Turns out, Harley’s Superbike effort took so long to develop that it fell far behind the completion before it even hit the track.

But if you’re a diehard Harley guy who wants to go vintage road racing, you don’t exactly have a ton of options. And even though it suffered from a technical disadvantage, several factory-backed teams fought hard for the VR1000. Plus, the bike served as a rolling test bed for Harley, who developed quite a few new parts as a result of their racing effort. So if you’ve got dreams of screaming around a road track on a truly American bike, look no further. Heck, you might even find the racing success HD narrowly avoided all those years, too. At worst, you’ll have a heck of a good time trying, at least.
