IMO you don't need to update as there is not much difference in the latest map release. Unless you live in very remote locales your original release usually has planned routes already designed in the maps. I update after about 3-4 years. I live in the dallas area and never had a problem. Others from other locales may jime in to dispute or concur.
I would not for another year or two cause I can't see paying for an update especially since it is such a P I A to use. If or when Harley works out some more of the bugs or makes it easier to use I may update it, I am just annoyed that you buy a 25++ grand motorcycle and you have to pay for the updates I mean you can buy a garmin on sale for a lot less, and get free life time map updates. Why can't harley?

I guess that all depends where you live and how much you use the gps and how much construction their is in the town you live in. I made a route when I first got my bike, and driving down the road it kept saying recalculating , I guess the road was not paved when they made the map! My map says 2012.

I believe the car companies also charge for GPS map updates. So Harley's not alone.
