Why would they switch if the old Dzus fasteners worked better?

Because some people just aren't smart enough to use Dzus fasteners.

I bet many of those that lost a bag had them off and didn't get them securely back on or they just never checked them. This fastening system is tried and true. If the MOCO thought this was a safety issue they wouldn't have this system in place. In 10k miles mine have never unlocked and that is what needs to happen and it has to happen to both fasteners to lose a bag. I do check mine once in awhile anyways so i will know if they are coming loose.

Did you know the MOCO recommends your bags are always locked when in motion? How many do that?

I do...:/

I also think it was operator error.

Rubber washer against the bag, then the metal waster.

Insert and lock the pin.

I think HD change the system because they had several bags fall off.

So they made more fool proof.

I have the lowes bolts and fasteners in the front position and the DZUS fasteners in the rear on both bags. I check them before each ride.

No issues with the DZUS.

I love my new HD fasteners. The stock ones showed a lot of wear and I didn't want to risk losing a bag. The large size of the knobs has not been an issue and the rear clips fit the bike better than aftermarket options. Ask your dealer to order this kit. It's about $40.

Have a 2016 SGS put 10,000 mi;e on it and have had no problems with the bags coming loose.

115,000 total miles with the stock fasteners. No issues except I bent the little tangs on one of them because I forced it when I was in a hurry. Make sure you have them completely turned in and I can't see how they can come loose. Check them for damage once in a while.

I check mine regularly on the '16 SG, but have had no issues at all with them coming loose.

I've owned five baggers and not experienced Dzus problems on any of them. I've been on a Sikorsky Blackhawk program for thirty years using Dzus fasteners on caution advisory panels without a known failure attributed to the fastener. That may not be an exact apples to apples comparison, but I'm not loosing any sleep over Dzus fastener failure on my limited.
