Blood Thinners? You still riding??

Started on Harley's in 96, first three, logged over 150K, rode in Every state, 4 coast to coast since 08. Last Harley 2004, had 80K on it. Sold it in Aug of 15 and bought a New Limited Low - only have 5800 miles, bike is Perfect.

Had open heart surgery - Bypass x 2. Doing well and getting stronger... Strength is not my concern... IF I am on Blood Thinners for the rest of my life... Would hate to have a minor accident and Bleed out in the middle of now where because I am on Blood thinners..

I may have the bike up for sale - However, I still need to think about it

Anyone here have By-Pass and on Blood Thinners and still rider??

age 67 - VERY active

I had the Bypass x 2 and Aortic valve replacement 2 years ago.
I asked the Cardiologist what he recommended; artificial or Pig valve.
Said since I was a motorcycle rider, he recommended the Pig valve for the reason you stated.

I did ride two months while on a Blood Thinner until I went back for a check-up. Now I'm off of them.

I'm 63. Why are you on Blood Thinner now?

By the way, mt FIL was on 'Thinner' for the last 10 years he was alive and he rode until he died of a MA.

There is nothing wrong with living your life as usual because of your blood thinner medication. Can you bleed out internally quicker? Sure. Well, a minor abrasion kill you? No. But if you rip your leg off yeah you prob will die but its the chance we take. Is it worth it to you to do something you love? Maybe just take it a little slower and a little more careful.

For reference and if it matters at all im an ER nurse

I've been on blood thinners for six years, bought a new ultra limited in 15. Even though the thinners concern me as it does you, I still ride and enjoy every minute of it. I carry a first aid kit now and I've learned to slow it down a bit since I'm retired. I'm in no hurry to get to a destination. Good luck in your decision.

I've had a couple heart attacks, 5 years apart and will be on plavix the rest of my life, I’m 64. Not planning on changing a thing.
A FYI Walgreens carries a product called Wound Seal that will help with small cuts.

After heart surgery, CABG, bypass, you do feel vulnerable, but you will get stronger and better than you were. I like to think that the insidious nature of heart deases is that it has been slowly slowing you up over the last decade. So now you are probably better than you were 10 years ago. But to insure you get to your full potential, ask the doctor for an exercise prescription.

Work out everyday based on his prescription, and you will reclaim and exceed where you were at, but exercise is key.

Blood thinners, aspirin is a blood thinner, ask your cardiologist if he takes 81 mg everyday as an insurance policy just in case. He may not but my somewhat limited research has shown that about 80% of the cardiologists over 40 do take 81, or baby aspirin everyday.

Take your blood thinner, and other prescribed meds, exercise as prescribed, healthy diet, do your best to reduce stress, watch out for distracted drivers and if ridding your bike contributes to the quality of your life, do it.
