My turn for the water pump failure
#22
I just replaced the pump on my 14 FLHTK. The kit that H-D is selling includes a pump by Pierburg. These pumps are made in Germany for use in Audi, Porsche and Mercedes Benz as "Auxiliary Coolant Pumps". The one in the kit looks exactly like the Mercedes Benz unit.
I cannot find this pump on Amazon or eBay for under $399. I just bought the whole kit which included the pump, new mounting bracket, fitted hoses and associated hose clamps and rubber washers for $265. I am starting to think that maybe H-D is not really trying to make their usual profit on these and are trying to make the problem quietly go away by selling these kits at cost rather than having to give them away as a recall.
I have put almost a thousand miles on the new pump in the last week or so and everything works beautifully. I now have much more peace of mind when leaving home on long trips.

My observation with the new system is that the fans don't run as often as with the old system , maybe this is due to the elimination of the thermostat, however bike runs like a top in 100 degree heat, i find myself leaning over to check that the fans come on and they do just not as often. Also the fans have never come on when I park or shut the bike down.

I have put 7000 miles on the new pump since January. When it was brand new, I got stuck in 5:00 traffic in Miami. I've also done three 500 mile trips recently. Still no issues. The new pump became standard in 2017. It's damn a shame what owners of 2014-2016 UL's had to deal with & money out of their pocket.

Replaced mine last weekend - not a difficult job, and at least does give you a chance to clean in spots you normally can't get to. Mine seems fine, even having had to ride it 800 miles to get home with it failed.

2015 FLHTK. Mine went out at just under 4 years at 70000 miles. I have extended warranty so it only cost me $50 to have it replaced. But I don't know if it is the newer model pump or not. And mine never brought in any alarms. I took it in because it was using coolant. The dealer diagnosed a bad pump.
