What's mind boggling to me is charging more for black cases and exhaust than chrome. It's like refineries saying they had to charge us to take the lead out of gasoline that they charged us to put there.
I prefer black, but my bike is a '12 and there wasn't an option for that then, and I'm definitely not going to change all those parts just to black it out.
It does seem weird that the Ultra Limited wouldn't come in chrome at all, but it may simply be an appeal to younger people, as I'd imagine that we are more in favor of a more muted look. I have had black painted steel wheels on my trucks for the last 20+ years, long before they were trendy or even offered on new vehicles. When I first started doing black wheels, people thought I was nuts, but it seems like I was a bit ahead of my time.
H-D probably realizes that Gen Xers and Millennials are their market now. Every boomer who wanted and could afford a Harley-Davidson probably already has one, or three.

For my birthday in 2021, my wife decided to buy me a new 2021 Ultra. She picked out he Gauntlet grey that was blacked out.
When she walked me over to it, I loved the bike - but hated the blacked-out option (by the way, that was extra back then, I have since triked the bike - and have to tell you, wow, I love that combination now. The new rear pipes are chrome and I worried that they would look a bit off. Nope, in my opinion, they fit right in. The rear lights are also chrome on the trike. Rear tires look like they are chrome - but they too are actually black.

Now I only have about 9,500 miles on my 2020 SGS (bought it last July used w/ 3,500) but as soon as I could I used what I've been using (and regularly use) Turtle-wax spray ceramic treatment and done properly the stuff is amazing now if your black powder coated trim is faded? Use Meguires Plastic Polish first to buff off the oxidation and Harleys Vivid Black touch up paint stick to fill any chips first then Turtle-wax ceramic and you'll be right up town which is cool but for those with bubbling chrome because the bean counters put it on thinner, thinner and thinnestt? They are screwed because there are no steps they can take to correct things.
