I got some road time in. I'm still trying to figure out exactly what I'm hearing and try to compare it to the DD. The speaker being tested is a Ground Zero GZNK 165SQ. At this point, I have done no speaker-specific tuning. I slapped this one in with the exact same tune I had on the AW. What is certain is they have slightly different characteristics. For one, the GZ takes significantly less power. Like 130W is ideal. It's just as "loud" as the AW but it excels in a different area and in a different way. This speaker has the ability to perform very well on the lower end of the midbass spectrum. Where the AW kicks, the GZ sort of booms, as much as a 6.5 can "boom" There's a slight difference in what I'm hearing up higher. Maybe 1000-6000? I feel like the AW hammers that frequency and the GZ...it doesn't fall short...but I don't think it's on the level of the AW and certainly not without a speaker specific tune. I'll work more on it tomorrow but my first impressions of this speaker is that while it's not a carbon copy of the legendary AW 6.5, it's most certainly a viable competitor. The GZ will stay in my sled and I'll get working on the EQ. I think they have the potential to be great but if there's a shortcoming, it's at the top of that midbass scale. Does the ability to hit the lower freq make up for that? At the moment, I'd say no.

I'm interested as well. A comparable speaker that uses a little less power might be better for the amp I'm starting with.
