Unless you like the look of the fat tank don't swap it out for better mileage before you confirm jet sizes and proper tune, as I would lean towards more youre running super rich. My built 80" with F'd up jetting still got high 20s into low 30s mpg and that's "cruising" at 85-90 at 4k+ rpm. I would start looking for gas stations around 100 miles on the odometer and usually switched to reserve around then knowing I had till 120 or so until I was out.

Pull the bowl and check your jets, something doesn't sound right there... I seen the worst builds even big inch Evo motors get better mileage in that.. I'm sure somebody put the wrong jets in it..... Unless your running with the enricher on...

If the carb ain't leaking about the only thing you need to possible replace is the bowl gasket. Poor fuel mileage can be caused by more than one thing.. If compression is good and ignition timing correct and you are not running open drag pipes, you can look into the carb.. As already stated make sure the enrichener is closing all the way, Look at how much accelerator pump is add. Many new carbs have it set wide open. Your intermediate jet should be something like a 28 or 29.5. Main mid to high 60s. If you have a different air-cleaner, check to make sure the bowl vent is clear. Also make sure the float level is set correctly and the O ring on the top of the accelerator pump tube is in place.

Ok thanks guys I already ordered the tank and I am going to do and check everything yall suggested. and worst case if I get 35+ MPG with a 6 gallon tank will just mean more time to ride.

I'd do intake leak check before anything else, get a can of brake clean and give a few shots at the flange the carb mounts on and each head when idling, my money's on a leak. That's good drop one size on the main jet should be 68-70 and make sure the accelerator pump isn't dribbling gas in at an idle, those 3 issues will kill gas mileage on an E.

Super E carbs are almost bulletproof and will run for years with little if any problems.

Ok well from a full tank running out of gas at 118 miles matches what you said I should be getting per tank. I got a rebuild kit gonna get new jets then will put everything back together. Also going to replace all the fuel lines to make sure there are no leaks that way. Oh and got a killer deal on a new 6 gallon tank so went a head and purchased one. will keep you informed.

Al;so make sure your accelerator pump is set properly. If you're dumping large chunks of gas every time you crack open the throttle that adds up. I usually refuel at about 145 miles and I have gas left.

no mr. max, i should have specified, not running a S&S. was trying to point out that his mileage should be higher. i have a soft tail out back that gets around 40 mpg avg, but once again, not a S&S unit.
