48 pan oil tank

Good afternoon everyone!!

I am restoring a 48 Panhead and have run into some issues (I'm sure there will be more to come). Here is the story. I started working on the oil tank the other day and noticed that there is / was a yellow coating on the inside of the tank. I am assuming this is some sort of an aftermarket tank sealer of some sort. looks like it was applied a long long time ago. Whatever it is, it is peeling and flaking. Not good. I want to get all of this stuff cleared out of the tank and am soliciting anyone with some ideas on how to do it. I was thinking about filling it up with gasoline and let it sit for a while and let the gas do some work. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

With respect,
Rick

Take it to a radiator shop and have it boiled out.

That sounds like a good idea, panz4ever. Is that just an idea to try or have you done that and did it work?

we would start with paint stripper in the tank roll it around couple hours see what that does

1948 has a one year only frame in the wishbone - no squishes on the down legs the hydra glide has for horn to mount

Did it on a set of early pan gas tanks that had some junk sealer that was coming apart. Then used Red Kote to reseal them.

Thanks everyone for the tips. I have heard about the radiator shop technique but wasn't sure if it could potentially damage the tank. These things are expensive as I am sure you know and I wont go repop. Thanks again for the info.

With respect,
Rick
