Go to a HD parts site and look up the part numbers for each. Many times there's photo's too and you can see if there are significant differences.
The answers are there if you do the work.

I have the 2012 switchback floor boards kit on my 2002, regular forwards will work with 2 exceptions, there will not be much adjustment in the brake rod, and shifting to neutral will be tricky but one would get used to it.

The forwards that came on my son's 2004 FXDLI are identical to the ones on my 2001 FXD. just replaced them with forwards off of a 2008 FXDB that are identical to the ones on my neighbor's 2007 FXDWG. Maybe it's a Dyna thing?

My brother and I are both using the 2005 style forwards on our 2006s...the new frame style.

When the 2006s came out, it was much cheaper to buy the old style forwards since we did this back in 2006.

The main difference is the shift rod length...they are a little short for our 2006s but they do work. It should work going the other way too, but the shift rod and brake rod may need looked into.

we had to replace the brake rod when we swapped out forwards on the 04 Low Rider with the ones off of the 08 Bob. Got a really nice used one down the street at a custom shop for $10. I took his nice, new purdy show-quality chrome one that would not fit his Low Rider anymore and put it on my 01 Super Glide...fit just fine.
