CGGorman's 99 Wide Glide build thread

I figure it's about time for a build thread rather than scattering stuff all over and cluttering up the daily thread.

I don't know what style this build falls in to. It's not quite a bob or hot rod or chop. It's just my style. I've got lots of plans that will take a couple years to fully realize due to a relatively small disposable cash flow but I gotta start somewhere.

Here is the bike on the day I picked it up (April 2015):

Fairly typical millennial WG dressed with lots of catalog chrome...not my style but the price was right. It was a California commuter bike. Lots of miles but well maintained. Most notable modification was the total removal of all emmisions equipment and addition of a Mikuni HSR42 carb.

https://i.postimg.cc/y6G1h43K/IMG-20150602-194134.jpg

Skip ahead for TL;DR, this is what it looks like as of Summer 2019 (still plenty planned):

https://i.postimg.cc/yxTXrrt1/201809...HDR[1].jpg

First thing I knew I had to do was get rid of all the non-functional chrome dress-up and two-up kit as well as find some more aggressive pipes.

A couple week later the easy work was done and I was sourcing new drivetrain covers in black and a new sleek seat but riding as it was anyway. I ditched all the easily removable chrome, sprayed on a bit of plasti-dip to obscure the battery box, and bolted on a wrapped set of V-Twin Mfg drag pipes:

https://i.postimg.cc/7PRr8BhH/IMG-20151009-193430.jpg

A couple more weeks and I found a nice used LePera Silhouette solo seat.

(image lost due to Photobucket assholes, this is the best I still have)
https://i.postimg.cc/sfN6vkHM/IMG-20151206-154308.jpg

Other than a few minor tweaks to the plasti-dip situation (replaced most of it with epoxy paint when the rubber started to wear thru), I rode it like that for the rest of the season. A couple thousand miles. I had bigger plans but didn't want to sacrifice saddle time making changes.

Time to do something about the carburetor... I'm a carb guy and always thought they were things of beauty. A thorough cleaning and some paint was in order. I also knew I wanted to relocate the coil so a clutch cable relocate was also in order. The air cleaner was always a nuisance for me, too. It hit me right in the side of the knee. It was a constant annoyance on the highway. A sidewinder style AC was the only option I could come up with that would guarantee me real knee room and it also would show off the carb. However, that would leave the long idle screw hanging out in the wind.

sooo....

All clean! After spending hours with a dremel sanding off casting flash, imperfections, and parting lines. Probably wasted effort to most people but I know the work that went into it and that's really all I care about.
https://i.postimg.cc/L47PSncq/IMG-20151204-202839.jpg

Made a custom short idle screw because I couldn't find another one I liked.
https://i.postimg.cc/c12rtP46/IMG-20151204-214544.jpg

Sanded and polished the new choke cable and bracket.
https://i.postimg.cc/WpCP7vZL/IMG-20151204-215003.jpg

Polished all the other silver bits and replaced the crap phillips screws with stainless button heads...polished of course.

Masked and painted satin black...

I was considering the DK Customs intake but I really don't like the stupid adapter and backing plate that I have to use with the Mikuni so I decided to make my own. Cheaper too. I didn't really want to use the 6" filter so I tried this 4" model. I didn't really like it either. I couldn't find a 5" that I liked so I ended up with the 6" after all.

https://i.postimg.cc/HWN6d3m0/IMG_20160202_074135.jpg
https://i.postimg.cc/nVgVt8PH/IMG_20160207_135126.jpg

Then I decided I didn't care for the cheap looking hose clamps so I found some narrow pressed stainless ones from Wurth. There are also dowels in the carb body that lock into key slots in the tube so it doesn't walk off or droop. They are hidden under the band clamp.

Tucks in super close!
https://i.postimg.cc/c1j2JdWb/IMG_20160207_135158.jpg

I odered the matching rain sock for the filter but I don't really want to run it all the time and I don't like the pink K&N cotton so I spent an afternoon degreasing it and dying it black. It has a slight blue tinge to it, but I can deal with that better than the pink.

The next part of the plan was to get the rear fender disappeared and get some more rubber under the bike. Those two things required some supporting modifications to make it work. No fender means normal seats won't fit. Fender struts had to go since there was no fender and a 200 won't really fit between them anyway. No struts or fender means nowhere to mount a license plate or brake light or turn signals. A wide tire means my original wide drive belt won't work. etc....

Before I tackled the wheel and tire, I wanted to be sure I had the legal stuff squared away. License plate first. After scouring the interwebs looking for clean and smart side mounts, I settled on the Cycle Visions In Close setup. I really like their swingarm mount. I wanted a vertical mount but a horizontal one came up real cheap on ebay so I snagged it. I figured I'd give it shot and knew if I didn't like it that I could drill a few holes to make it work. Once I got it, I definitely wasn't happy with the fit. More custom work!

The "in close" mount as delivered...yuck. I couldn't turn the backing plate over to get it any closer. It hit the pulley before it got within 1/2" of the mounting holes. This was the only fitment available to me as delivered.

https://i.postimg.cc/jqmTt7RJ/IMG-20151206-154240.jpg

I wanted it seriously tucked in. To get there, I needed to make a new backing plate.

The original backing plate:
https://i.postimg.cc/wxPjBBhn/IMG-20151206-185005.jpg

The first revision of the custom backer would allow one horizontal position and one vertical position. I really don't know why CV doesn't make their's like this. Wouldn't cost any more... I've since made a second revision with six different mounting locations 3 horizontal and 3 vertical. I talked with the local cops and they say that vertical mount is fine, but I decided to hedge my bets and machine it to accommodate both.

Revision 1

Revision 2 (a bit scuffed up from knocking around the shop for the last couple months and being mounted and removed a couple times doing fit ups.)

The next step was to ixnay the rear fender and struts. I also cut off the rear passenger peg mount, the upper chain guard tabs, front seat mount loop, & a few other little warts. No going back now!

Got a new console painted with VHT Wrinkle Plus today. Looks good. I'm now a fan. MUCH cheaper and easier to apply than the HD stuff.

It's a custom contoured 2004+ Road King console. Took a fair amount of work to get it where I wanted it, but it's way better than the boxy thing that came on the 99.

Going to be using a rigid mount solo seat that will leave it exposed, so I bent up a cover panel for the frame area under the seat today. Still need to do a little tweaking and get the seat mounting figured out before I can finish it, but I like what I've got so far. I also need to make some plugs for rear down tubes and make the shock bolt covers before I can call this area finished.

I forgot to put my lighting stuff in here. Spent a couple weeks working on this stuff...not counting pre-purchase research.

I knew early on that I wanted a stripped down look but didn't want to sacrifice visibility or safety so I spent a lot of time looking into various LED options. Most of the best solutions seem to be coming out of Europe for some reason. My first thought was Kellerman lights for both front and rear indicators, but ultimately decided the style didn't work with my bike.

I ended up finding Motogadget and fell in love with their M-Blaze Disc bar end blinkers. Found a domestic supplier in Revival Cycles and ordered a set, plus the Revival Supernova tail lights.

The M-Blaze (These things are AMAZING!)
https://i.postimg.cc/05FSXBGS/IMG_20160216_175516.jpg
https://i.postimg.cc/BZVkvHH3/IMG_20160216_175607.jpg

The Supernova (very good for their size and power rating.)

https://i.postimg.cc/qBFKZvVQ/IMG_20160216_180157.jpg
https://i.postimg.cc/T2FYgygj/IMG_20160216_180534.jpg

After mulling over the Supernovas for a couple days I decided they just weren't visible enough at 50+ feet. They're plenty bright but just so small I was afraid they would disappear in the daytime glare. I am kinda paranoid of people rear-ending or stopping short behind me since I generally have nowhere to go and can't do anything to anticipate their error. I went digging and found some very similar 9 watt LED bolts that I thought would be much brighter. Those were OK. Wider dispersion pattern but I didn't feel they were much more noticable. That left me thinking I needed a larger lens area. Larger, but still discrete and stylish.

Usher in the Motone brand Bates-style tail light. They're a nice upgrade over the cheaper look-alikes. Much heavier build and all stainless (os so I thought. After I ordered the black ones I found out only the polished ones are all stainless. Oh well. The black ones are powder coated inside and out and the hardware and brackets are all stainless.

https://i.postimg.cc/ZYQ67tW8/IMG_20160305_190927.jpg

They ship with LED "bulbs", but I really only wanted the housings. I knew I wouldn't be happy with the original light output. I had a fair amount of previous experience designing and building custom LED light fixtures so I immediately started hatching a scheme to supercharge these Bates housings...

Since I already knew where to look and what to look for, I quickly landed on the LedEngin LZ4 package. It's rated at 440-610 lumens depending on input power (700-1000 mA, 9v max) They're available pre-mounted to 20mm boards which makes them easy to mount and wire. I ordered a couple of them, some wide-angle collimator lens, & resistors. Heatsinking these lighting class diodes is super critical to keep them shining so I also designed and fabbed a combination mounting bracket/heatsink. It's made of .065" solid copper. Early testing showed I needed about 3/4 inch focal length to make the most of the 2" bates lens, but even then it had a really bad "hot spot" in the center. To fix that I added a fresnel behind the fluted Bates lens. That got me just what I wanted: a OEM-quality light spread and a nice unique specular pattern.

https://i.postimg.cc/8k3fNRBM/IMG_20160307_231031.jpg

The fresnel sections were cut out of stock Harley lenses on the lathe and then glued inside the Bates lens.

cggorman 03-17-2016 08:55 PM

I haven't decided if I'll even do a fender. I need to get the seat settled in place first.

hetkehog 03-17-2016 08:58 PM

Very sick build. Cant wait to see it done. I am a machinist so fab is no biggie. I think you just inspired me for a build in the fallowing winter

Thanks!

Looks good (of course). This first part reminds me of my old sheetmetal days...can you say "bend allowance" ;)

In the photo below, it looks like the Revival Supernova performs pretty well.

Continue on my friend :)

cggorman 03-18-2016 07:50 AM

The Supernova is very very respectable. The only concern I had was that it's only 3/4" of lens. A pin point of light at 100'. As a turn signal light, I would have no hesitation but I'd be using it as a brake light too. On the highway I want better visibility at normal reaction distances.

cggorman 03-18-2016 08:24 AM

Got the ARP stainless fasteners from Alloyboltz.com. Theyre a veteran owned/operated company selling US made fasteners. This is a really nice kit. Everything is clearly labeled. Even then the different sizes within a bag are separately sealed off. Some of the flanges are even turned down (where the ARP flange diameter wouldn't work, I assume). Nicely polished and these aren't even the "show polish" version. Highly recommended.

cggorman 03-18-2016 09:38 AM

FedEx man just dropped off some more hardware.

Got some stainless 3/8 sex bolts and shoulder bolts that I plan to modify for tank mounting bolts.
Some stainless 10-32 undercut flat head screws for the seat trim mounting.
Grade 5 armor-coat socket heads for sprocket adapter.
Grade 5 hex caps for sprocket that will need modified to fit.
Stainless button heads for brake rotor.

Custom tank bolts...

This is going to be good....Pretty crafty with the light brackets I must say.Don't sweat the no fender thing as you can always throw a Voodoo fender on it and be right back in the game. Also,if you feel the strut mounts are a little thin you can always build em back up...(welder) :icon_toast:

cggorman 03-18-2016 11:20 AM

Thanks for the compliment. That means a lot coming from you. I always thought your bike was badass. Much of my early inspiration came from Rocket Bobs. I was originally thinking about a pintail but just couldnt get into the point at the tail. I'm sure he'd glass up a custom one for me, but it would have to be at least a grand. Too salty for me. He makes the best custom Dynas in the world, IMO. He seems to be moving away from them, tho. Makes me a little sad. More Dyna Love, Pete!

cggorman 03-18-2016 01:43 PM

Fitted my tail light brackets and the sleeves that cover the top shock bolt. Small detail but worth the effort, I think. Refining the shock mounting ears and cover fit, too.

Sent Pete an email (about an order) and told him the Dyna guys are feeling left out and he said this: "Hey that's crazy talk !! I'll never move away from Dynas. We have 6 in the shop alone at the moment and constantly working with guys on their builds in the states".

Trying to get a Sporty kit out and breakout. But nothing gets me going like the Dyna. The current (06 - ) FXD range are the best bikes HD have ever done.

We will always be Dyna first 😎👍

Yay! That's so good to hear!

cggorman 03-29-2016 07:05 PM

I got all the wrinkle black drivetrain covers installed. I'm liking the look with the ARP bolts.

https://i.postimg.cc/nVg4jvxY/IMG_20160601_220711.jpg

Also finally tore off the primary to get the sprocket fit up. Based on my research of people with slightly newer Dynas I gambled that a .750 offset front would work. Not even close. Even with the 3/4 on there it still measures 5/8 too short. That would hit the inner primary so I ordered the 1.060 offset from PBI. I'll have to make up the difference at the hub. Think I'm gonna have to offset the tire. Bummer. I wanted it centered in the swingarm. Will make new axle spacers, shorten the pulley adapter/spacer, and maybe modify the rear caliper bracket... No wonder I couldn't find anybody doing this to a '99. Oh well. Adapt and overcome.

https://i.postimg.cc/dQfjh6xn/IMG_20160329_195207.jpg

tcarson84 03-29-2016 08:57 PM

Hmm? I was hoping this would work I would like to do wider tire on my 99 Lowrider. Keep us posted on how you get it to work. I have heard that some people are spacing out there primaries but that seem pretty labor intensive, i would think you would have to put on longer shafts for everything if you did that.

tcarson84 03-29-2016 09:15 PM

Also did you by those new wrinkle black cases or paint your old ones?

cggorman 03-29-2016 09:17 PM

The covers are powder coated. Got them from a coater that sells on eBay. I kept my chrome ones. Never know when I may want to change back!

tcarson84 03-29-2016 09:21 PM

My chrome ones are flaking off in some spots so been thinking for a winter project to take them off and take a grinder to them and then paint them. Have heard the chrome is hard to get off though. Depends on how much it would cost i might get them powdercoated but got to get that chrome off first.

by the way those look good on your bike

cggorman 03-29-2016 09:24 PM

As I understand it, the better powder coaters strip chrome prior to spraying. The local shop here does.

cggorman 04-02-2016 11:55 AM

Well damn. I got the 1.060 sprocket in and I would still need to offset the tire at least 1/4" to make it work. PBI says the 1.06 is the widest that will fit under the 5 speed primary. I'd tend to agree. With some modification of the inner primary I think I could squeeze another .100 out of it but that would sacrifice quite a bit of strength of the mainshaft outer bearing carrier. Probably not a smart mod.

That leaves me with three options as I see it...

1) Offset the whole primary 1/4" and get the 1.125 sprocket.
2) Live with the tire offset and change the brake to make that work. Maybe a sprocket brake?
3) Go to a 180mm tire.

I need to do some more thinking...

hetkehog 04-02-2016 12:05 PM

I would think the sprocket/rotor would work running no fender or even a short rear fender, if your rear wheel isn't perfectly in the center if the swingarm, you think it would be a issue? that I don't know. I do have to say, im glad you bought the 1.06 sprocket so know I know lol
